Fresha vs AppFlow: Free Software, or Software You Control?

Aglet Technologies

Fresha's subscription-free model is genuinely attractive. The question is what the marketplace does with your customers, and what happens to your own website.

Fresha's pitch is hard to beat on the surface: subscription-free booking software for salons and clinics, monetised through payment processing and a consumer marketplace that sends you new clients. Thousands of businesses run on it happily.

AppFlow is the opposite model — you pay a monthly subscription, and there is no marketplace between you and your customer. Which is better depends on a question most comparisons skip: whose customer is it?

The two business models

Fresha gives the software away and earns from payments and marketplace activity. Your business appears in a consumer app alongside the other salons in your suburb, and new-client bookings that come through it carry their own commercial terms.

AppFlow charges $39–$169/month depending on the plan, takes nothing from your transactions, and has no consumer marketplace. Payments run through your own Stripe or Square account and settle to your bank directly.

Neither model is dishonest. They pull in different directions, and it is worth being clear-eyed about which direction suits you.

Where Fresha wins

  • No monthly subscription, which matters when cashflow is tight
  • Strong, mature product for salon and clinic workflows
  • The marketplace can genuinely deliver new clients, particularly in dense metro areas
  • Well-known to consumers in some markets, which lowers booking friction

If you are starting out, in a busy city, and want volume through the door, that is a real offer.

Where it gets uncomfortable

Your customers are also in someone else's shop window

A marketplace shows your client the salon two streets over. That is what marketplaces are for. If you have spent years building a loyal book, a platform that recirculates it is a strategic risk, not just a fee.

Transaction economics scale with you

Subscription-free means the platform earns when you earn. At low volume that is cheap. As you grow, a flat monthly fee usually wins on total cost — and it is predictable.

The website is still your problem

Booking software is not a website. You still need somewhere that ranks for "barber Townsville", explains what you do, carries your photos, and captures people who are not searching a marketplace. That is a second subscription and a second thing to maintain.

Your brand sits inside theirs

Booking through a marketplace app is a marketplace experience with your logo in it. Some businesses do not mind. Businesses building a premium brand usually do.

What AppFlow does differently

  • A website on your own domain, from the entry plan — pages, blog, forms, per-page SEO, SSL handled, so you own the discovery channel as well as the booking
  • Your own Stripe or Square account — deposits, balances and refunds settle straight to you
  • Per-service payment rules: none, deposit, full payment, or a held bond
  • Availability that matches the day: staff hours, durations, buffers, lead times, booking windows
  • Client CRM with history, documents, saved cards and messages — your list, exportable
  • Marketing you control: reminders, thank-yous, win-backs, review requests and segmented campaigns to VIPs, lapsed clients or no-shows
  • Memberships and credits for regulars, and a product shop with pickup at the next appointment
  • Back office: team calendars, timesheets with Xero payroll export, multi-location, service areas, route planning

There is also a lead side to AppFlow — the directory network can pass enquiries into your inbox — but it is an option you switch on, not a shop window your regulars get browsed out of.

The honest cost comparison

AppFlow: $39/month for site and booking page, $59 with the management app, $99 for team calendars, CRM and embeds, $169 for multi-site with marketing. No setup fee, no lock-in. Card processing is your own Stripe or Square rate.

Fresha: no subscription, with revenue coming from payment processing and marketplace terms. Work out what that costs you at your actual monthly turnover, then compare — and include what you pay for a website today.

Plan names and prices move around on every platform, ours included. The AppFlow figures here are the public ones on appflow.com.au at the time of writing — check the competitor's current pricing page before you decide.

Which model suits you

Pick Fresha if you want new-client volume from a marketplace, your book is not yet your main asset, and a subscription line is hard right now.

Pick AppFlow if your regulars *are* the business, you want the website and the customer list in your own name, and you would rather pay a flat fee than a share of every transaction.
